Venturing Beyond the Chesapeake: ICW and Bahamas

3:00 5:00 - John Herlig (www.avedelmar.com)
Are you preparing to leave your home waters for the first time for some warm-latitude boating? If so, the path to those waters often includes the Intracoastal Waterway and a crossing to the Bahamas.

Transiting the ICW is a rich experience that doesn’t have to be stressful. John will teach you about route planning, tides, fuel, water, provisioning, and marinas. Is the Dismal Swamp Canal treacherous? Do you know drawbridge etiquette? What are the states’ anchoring laws?

After you make it to Florida you will need to know how to execute a safe crossing to the Bahamas. Do you know how to calculate a Gulf Stream offset? How to use Click-2-Clear? How to find a doctor or a veterinarian in the islands?

Learn about groceries, anchoring, potable water, telecommunications options, and become more confident in your plan with a deeper dive into the ICW and the Bahamas with veteran cruiser John Herlig.

The Fine Print – All the Contracts You Sign as a Boat Owner

12:15-1:15: Kerry Gonzalez (AMG Insurance Int’l)
I’m sure no boat owner has ever signed something without reading it?!? What do you mean ‘fine print’? In this seminar, learn to speed read through all the ‘traps’ of contracts and take control of your own consequences. Are you within the terms of your loan? Did your ‘buyers’ broker’ include conditions in your purchase agreement related to the ability to lower the purchase price based on the FMV (Fair Market Value) of the survey or are you stuck with your purchase price regardless of the condition and valuation of the survey? How are you titling/registering your boat? When someone maintains your vessel, do you know if they are licensed or insured? How do you formally manage the expectations of your caretaker, captain or crew, especially if you are not around? Are you contemplating signing a ‘hurricane haulout contract’ for Named Storms? If so, are you reading the disclaimers? Do you know when you sign a contract with some of the largest marina conglomerates, that you agree to pay for damages that you can’t even insure?!? This seminar will give you both fear and relief at the same time. Most important, it will put YOU in the driver’s seat and empower you with the ability to quickly recognize key words in the ‘fine print’ that could significantly impact your budget in these and other contracts: Lending, Captain & Crew Agreements, Purchase, Survey, Maintenance, Towing & Salvage, Insurance, Chartering, Caretakers, Marina/Boatyard, Hurricane Haul-out and Contractors.

Sound Like a Pro Using Your VHF Radio

1:30-3:00 John Herlig (www.avedelmar.com)
Your VHF radio may be the single most important piece of safety gear you own—but do you really know how to get the most out of it? It seems so simple: turn the radio on, click the mic, and talk. But what channel do you use to call another boat at a drawbridge? Do you say “Over” at the end of every sentence? What is squelch and how does it work? And how do you use advanced features like automated distress calling, AIS, and weather channels? In this fun and fast-paced class you’ll learn everything from how to make basic VHF calls to what lingo you should avoid using, how to properly use your radio’s advanced features, and lots more.
